My very dear friend asked me to make a cake for her daughters 6th birthday this year. She loves Pet Shop and does not eat cake. Hum, I thought, how do I solve this problem? She does however, love chocolate chip cookies. So I made two plaques from fondant and used a technique called run out to draw on her favorite Pet Shop kitty. One was place on the half chocolate chiffon cake, half white trillium, and the other was placed on top of a cookie stack. They turned out very well and the birthday girl was very pleased!

What do you mean by the run out technique? It’ll probably go over my head but I’m interested in the process. I like how it turned out!

Wilton teaches a run out method they call “color flow”, however they teach you to do it over parchment paper, but the result is a very fragile piece of work. The Cake Journal teaches a method of piping directly onto dried fondant which works very well. First you trace your design with a sharp pin. Then you outline your design in royal icing. That dries for 24 hours. Now you come back with syrup consistency royal icing and begin to fill in your spaces. You fill it until there is a nice pillow of icing in the area and then allow to dry another 24 hours. Paint and add luster dust and your done! Hope this helps, a tutorial can be found in the cake projects section at http://www.cakejournal.com
